Community Training for Fire Resilience in Dominican Republic

Global Coralition and EcoSoluciones host training in Cabarete to equip locals with wildfire prevention and coastal protection skills.

From August 26–28, 2025, Global Coralition and EcoSoluciones organized a forest fire prevention workshop in the community of Cabarete, Dominican Republic. Held at Escuela Colonia Nueva – Callejón de la Loma, the sessions brought together local residents for three afternoons of training focused on protecting the lagoon and surrounding ecosystems from the threat of wildfires.

Over the course of the workshop, participants explored both theoretical and practical approaches to fire prevention and management:

  • Understanding the difference between fire and wildfire

  • The importance of quick detection and reporting

  • Containment and suppression techniques

  • Types of wildfires and appropriate response methods

  • An introduction to first aid

On the final day, participants took part in a field practice, simulating wildfire support and applying fire management techniques in a real-world setting. They also engaged in a practical first aid exercise, ensuring they could respond effectively in case of emergencies.

The workshop trained 10 community members, all of whom will receive a certificate of participation. This effort expands the local fire prevention network to 20 active members, building a stronger, more cohesive team ready to respond to emergencies and protect the lagoon’s ecosystems.

Objectives of the workshop included:

  • Equipping the community with knowledge and skills for wildfire prevention and response

  • Strengthening cohesion and engagement among local residents

  • Supporting lagoon conservation and restoration through rapid emergency response

  • Expanding the network of trained individuals

  • Establishing connections with partners like the Cobra Squadron from Santiago, which provided materials and operational support

The sessions were hosted by Marta Bellanova and led by Ángel Ramón, a member of the Civil Defense, whose expertise guided participants through every stage of the training.

By investing in community-led fire prevention, Global Coralition and EcoSoluciones are not only protecting ecosystems but also empowering local guardians who stand at the frontlines of climate resilience.
