Dive into Conservation: Join Our Volunteer Program in Sosúa, Dominican Republic
The northern coast of the Dominican Republic is home to one of the country’s most iconic marine ecosystems: the coral reefs of Sosúa Bay. Once thriving and teeming with life, these reefs have suffered significant degradation over the past decades due to overfishing, pollution, climate change, and coastal development. Today, more than 80% of coral cover in the Caribbean has been lost, and Sosúa’s reefs are no exception.
Yet, these ecosystems are vital. Coral reefs protect coastlines from erosion and storms, sustain local fisheries, and provide livelihoods for surrounding communities. They are also biodiversity hotspots, home to thousands of marine species that depend on them to survive. Restoring them is not just an environmental necessity, but a commitment to safeguarding culture, food security, and resilience for future generations.
That’s where our volunteer programs come in. At Global Coralition, we combine science, art, and community action to restore coral reefs and reconnect people with the ocean. Through our hands-on volunteer experiences in Sosúa, participants actively contribute to marine conservation while immersing themselves in the rich culture of the Dominican Republic.
What Volunteers Do
Learn and apply micro-fragmentation techniques to accelerate coral growth
Help maintain and monitor coral nurseries
Collect data on coral species and environmental conditions
Assist in planting coral fragments back into the reef
Engage in research and meaningful fieldwork
Beyond the scientific work, volunteers are part of a vibrant community effort that includes cultural exchanges, environmental education, and collaboration with local fishers, youth, and schools.
Why Join?
Becoming a volunteer is more than a trip, it’s a transformative experience. You’ll gain hands-on marine conservation skills, forge friendships with people from across the world, and contribute directly to restoring one of the Caribbean’s most threatened ecosystems. Together, we can bring Sosúa’s reefs back to life.
Limited spots are available for each session (2–10 participants). Programs include accommodations, meals, transfers, project equipment, cultural activities, and 24/7 support. Optional PADI certification is also available.
