Anakaona
Anakaona
Playa Moron, Dominican Republic
Anakaona, one of the island’s most revered caciques, inspires a new sculpture that marks the beginning of a coral restoration effort in Playa Morón, Samaná, where less than 5% of the reef remains alive. This underwater artwork not only honors Anacaona’s legacy but also serves as an artificial reef designed to regenerate corals and restore the marine ecosystem in the area.
Local fishermen, who have witnessed the decline of the reefs firsthand, have joined this effort to ensure protection of their area Their participation is key to securing long-term food and economic stability for the community, demonstrating that collaboration between art, science, and local communities can have a profound and lasting impact on marine conservation.
