Mazu
mazu
Koh Tao, Thailand
Mazu, the protector of the sea, was deployed in 2018 in collaboration with Eco Koh Tao. This underwater sculpture has become a beacon for marine conservation, attracting hundreds of divers each week, creating both awareness and financial support for local restoration initiatives. As a symbol of protection and renewal, Mazu not only draws attention to the fragility of our oceans but actively contributes to their restoration.
Within just four months of its deployment, the sculpture was completely covered in crustose coralline algae (CCA), an essential component in coral reef development and regeneration. Mazu’s rapid integration into the marine ecosystem highlights the effectiveness of merging art and science in conservation efforts.
