Inspiring Ocean Guardians: 3 Mariposas Montessori Students Learn About Coral Reef Conservation
On October 9, 2025, Global Coralition welcomed 23 students from 3 Mariposas Montessori for an interactive educational experience at Fundación Ecológica Maguá in Sosúa. Through games, hands-on science, and art, the children learned about coral reef conservation and restoration in Sosúa Bay.
On October 9, 2025, Global Coralition hosted an inspiring educational activity with 23 enthusiastic students from 3 Mariposas Montessori at Fundación Ecológica Maguá in Sosúa. The experience focused on introducing children to the work being done to conserve and restore the coral reefs of Sosúa Bay.
The activity began with a short theoretical introduction on the ecological importance of corals, their role in marine ecosystems, and the threats they face. This was followed by interactive question-and-answer sessions and educational games designed to reinforce learning in a fun and participatory way.
A highlight of the session was a demonstration by our technician, Melf, who introduced the students to the microfragmentation technique, a key method used in coral reproduction and restoration. The children had the opportunity to observe coral samples under a microscope, touch coral fragments used as educational materials, and gain a hands-on understanding of the restoration process.
To conclude the day, the students engaged in an artistic activity where they drew and colored a canvas depicting the Atabey Statue, coral reefs, and marine species found in Sosúa Bay—creatively integrating everything they had learned.
The activity proved to be both highly educational and engaging. The children showed great curiosity and interest, deepening their understanding of why protecting marine ecosystems matters. It was a meaningful and joyful experience for both facilitators and students, inspiring a new generation of ocean guardians to care for their natural heritage.
A special thank you to Fundación Ecológica Maguá for their incredible coral conservation work and for their constant support of our educational and restoration initiatives.
