Virgin Voyages Crew Plants 243 Native Species at Cabarete Lagoon

Virgin Voyages collaborators planted 243 native species at Cabarete Lagoon, supporting coastal restoration in the Dominican Republic.

On Monday, January 19, Global Coralition and EcoSolucionesRD partnered with 34 Virgin Voyages collaborators for an afternoon of mangrove restoration at the Cabarete Lagoon in the Dominican Republic.

From 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., the group participated in a hands-on planting experience focused on restoring one of the region’s most important coastal ecosystems.

Learning Before Action

The activity began with a brief educational talk about the importance of mangroves and native coastal plants as natural protective barriers. Participants learned how these ecosystems help prevent erosion, strengthen coastlines, support biodiversity, and contribute to climate change mitigation by capturing and storing carbon.

Understanding the ecological value of native species such as button mangrove and sea grape helped frame the purpose of the day. The goal was to restore balance to the lagoon while strengthening its natural resilience.

A Dynamic Experience Across the Lagoon

After the introduction, the group took to the water.

Using kayaks and paddleboards, participants moved from one side of the lagoon to the other, turning the restoration effort into an active and immersive experience. The combination of environmental action and physical engagement made the day both meaningful and memorable.

Together, the team planted 243 native plants, including button mangroves and sea grape. Each seedling contributed directly to the regeneration of the Cabarete Lagoon’s coastal edge.

Tourism and Sustainability in Action

The afternoon concluded with a light lunch and closing reflection at 4:00 p.m., marking the completion of a productive day rooted in teamwork and sustainability.

By integrating environmental restoration into their company culture, Virgin Voyages continues to demonstrate how the tourism industry can play a positive role in protecting coastal ecosystems. Through partnerships like this, Global Coralition connects community, conservation, and climate resilience in practical and measurable ways.

Every plant placed in the soil represents collaboration, awareness, and a shared responsibility to protect the natural environments that sustain us all.
