The 50 Reefs: Giving Coral Reefs a Fighting Chance

In a groundbreaking study, The Ocean Agency identified 50 coral reef sites worldwide with the best chance of surviving climate change.

Protecting these reefs could preserve up to 90% of the world’s coral species!

Why these 50?

  • High coral diversity

  • Natural resilience to heat stress

  • Connectivity to repopulate damaged reefs

We are currently estimated to lose 90% of our reefs by 2050. This approach focuses limited resources and limited time, where they can have the greatest global impact.

The average coral restoration organization restores only on average, 200 square meters of reef - even with decades of effort.

Recent bleaching events, ocean acidification, and overfishing threaten to wipe out coral ecosystems within decades if global temperatures continue to rise unchecked. By focusing conservation efforts on these scientifically identified sites, we can give coral reefs — and the marine life and coastal communities they support — a fighting chance.

Global Coralition is launching a 50 Reefs Campaign to restore and protect these critical sites by:

  • Partnering with local communities

  • Launching large-scale underwater sculpture gardens

  • Building coral nurseries and kickstarting mangrove restoration efforts
