How Art Becomes a Catalyst for Ocean Restoration

Global Coralition harnesses the power of art to inspire ocean conservation, restore marine ecosystems, and unite communities. Through monumental sculptures like Atabey in Sosúa Bay, we use creativity as a catalyst for environmental change, awareness, and action.

Art as a Catalyst for Environmental Transformation

Art has the power to move people emotionally, spark curiosity, and build connections between communities and nature. When placed in public spaces, on land or underwater, art becomes a bridge between science, culture, and collective action.

At Global Coralition, we understand that true environmental change requires more than data, reports, and restoration tools. It requires emotion. Connection. A story people can feel.

Our sculptures turn complex environmental issues into something tangible and intimate, inviting people to experience the ocean as a living, sacred ecosystem.

Art Meets Ecology: Sculptures as Living Restoration Platforms

Global Coralition integrates art directly into coastal ecosystem restoration. Each sculpture is designed not just to inspire, but to heal, acting as a foundation for coral growth and a refuge for marine life.

These artworks become:

  • Artificial reefs that support biodiversity

  • Restoration platforms for coral microfragmentation

  • Educational landmarks for students, volunteers, and travelers

  • Cultural symbols that reinforce community identity and stewardship

They evolve over time, growing richer, more biodiverse, and more meaningful as the ocean embraces them.

Atabey: Art That Awakens

In the heart of Sosúa Bay stands Atabey, our flagship underwater sculpture and a powerful symbol of ecological and cultural renewal. Named after the Taíno mother goddess of water and creation, Atabey honors the deep relationship between people and the ocean.

What Makes Atabey Exceptional

A coral restoration hub with 18 domes
Surrounding Atabey are 18 coral restoration domes, each functioning as a micro-reef. Together, they hold approximately 1,300 coral fragments—a living underwater gallery of regeneration.

A growing marine habitat
The structure hosts schools of fish, invertebrates, and emerging coral colonies, increasing biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.

A powerful educational tool
Students, local communities, and international partners visit Atabey to learn about coral biology, climate change, and restoration techniques through hands-on experiences.

An inspiring eco-tourism destination
Visitors can snorkel around the sculpture, experiencing conservation through art in an immersive and emotional way.

A symbol of community collaboration
Atabey has become a point of pride for Sosúa and surrounding communities, a testament to what collective action can achieve.

Atabey is more than a sculpture: it is a living monument of hope, where art and nature evolve together.

How Art Drives Change

Through our sculpture program, we catalyze environmental action by:

  • Engaging people emotionally, beyond scientific language

  • Creating new habitats that support coral growth and marine species

  • Expanding environmental education through immersive experiences

  • Promoting sustainable tourism that supports local economies

  • Mobilizing communities to become active protectors of the ocean

Art opens the heart. Science guides the hands. Together, they create lasting impact.

A Vision Where Creativity Restores the Ocean

At Global Coralition, we envision a future where artistic expression strengthens environmental resilience, where underwater sculptures bloom with life, and where communities feel deeply connected to the ecosystems they protect.

Atabey represents this vision in motion — a place where restoration, culture, and creativity converge beneath the waves.

As we continue expanding our sculpture program, we remain committed to using art not only to inspire but to restore, regenerate, and reimagine what is possible for our ocean.

Art can catalyze change. Together, we can make that change lasting.
