Pyramid Artificial Reefs Deployed Around Atabey: A New Chapter for Coral and Marine Life
Global Coralition is thrilled to announce the successful deployment of a series of pyramid artificial reefs around Atabey, our iconic underwater sculpture off the coast of Sosúa, Dominican Republic. These new structures are accelerating coral restoration and transforming Atabey into a thriving hub of marine biodiversity.
Building Living Reefs with Pyramids
Each of the newly deployed pyramid artificial reefs is designed to hold nearly 100 microfragments of coral, carefully propagated using the microfragmentation technique. These tiny pieces of resilient coral are secured to the pyramids’ surfaces, where they quickly heal, grow, and begin to fuse together into larger, complex colonies. Over time, these colonies will form the structural backbone of a healthy, living reef — providing shelter, food, and breeding grounds for countless marine species.
The pyramids are constructed to mimic the natural complexity of reef environments, offering nooks, crevices, and vertical surfaces where corals can thrive and marine life can find refuge.
Testing, Learning, and Scaling Up
The deployment of these pyramids marks an important pilot phase in Global Coralition’s restoration strategy. Over the coming months, our team will:
✅ Monitor coral growth and survival rates on the pyramids,
✅ Document changes in fish populations and overall reef biodiversity,
✅ Evaluate the stability and performance of the structures during ocean conditions.
Our team plans to deploy additional pyramids around Atabey, expanding this living reef ecosystem and enhancing coastal resilience against storms and erosion.
