On March 19, Global Coralition, through its operational hub EcoSoluciones RD, welcomed 22 students from 3 Mariposas Montessori for an immersive environmental learning experience at Rugama Tours, an ecological park located in the Cabarete Lagoon.
The morning began with an introductory talk about mangroves and their essential role in protecting coastal ecosystems. Students learned how these natural systems help preserve biodiversity, stabilize shorelines, and support the health of surrounding communities.
To reinforce the learning in a fun and engaging way, the group participated in interactive activities designed to encourage teamwork and curiosity.
After a short snack break, the students explored the park on a guided tour led by Rudy, where they observed local flora and fauna and gained a deeper understanding of the natural environment.
The experience continued with a walk to the dock, where participants boarded a boat for a tour of the lagoon. The route took them along the waterway toward the river and the mouth of Cabarete, where the lagoon meets the ocean. This part of the journey allowed the students to experience firsthand the connection between different coastal ecosystems.
The group later returned to Rugama Tours to close the activity, wrapping up a morning filled with exploration, learning, and meaningful connection with nature.
This experience highlights the importance of environmental education at an early age. By creating opportunities for direct interaction with ecosystems like mangroves, we help inspire the next generation to value and protect the natural world around them.
